Josh O’Connor has revealed he was sacked as an altar boy – because he was smiling too much on the job.

The Crown star, 35, reminisced about his short-lived role in church as he plays a Catholic priest in Netflix‘s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

Appearing on Late Night with Seth Myers, Josh said his playful attitude cost him the job, which he said he was ‘brilliant’ at.

He revealed: ‘I was an altar boy and it was sort of my first foray into being what I thought was being on stage, and I was red for smiling too much.

‘I think my mum said to the priest: ‘He’s smiling in the presence of the Lord’.

‘But I was smiling because I could see my brothers and it was funny.’

Josh had previously spoken about being an altar boy and losing his job in an interview with Vogue.

He explained: ‘I was in this ridiculous outfit, my brothers were watching me, I was waving at them and probably not being gracious enough in that moment.

‘That was probably those early signs of theatricality.’

He first starred as a young Prince Charles in the third season of the Netflix hit series The Crown and later worked alongside Emma Corrin’s Princess Diana in season four.

Josh is fast becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men.

His burgeoning fame was cemented in Challengers, with his performance as Patrick, a cocksure tennis professional.

He’s one of several actors, including Paul Mescal, who have sprung to fame for portraying more nuanced sides of masculinity.

Although Josh put it more bluntly in an interview: ‘I think we’re all still trying to figure out what the f*** is wrong with men.’

His role in the 2017 film God’s Own Country fits into this category. As his character falls in love with a man, he bares more of his soul – and more of his body.

The nudity was no less full- frontal in the romantic drama Mothering Sunday, whose intimate sex scenes raised eyebrows.

Josh explained: ‘I’m pretty comfortable in that situation. We’re all insecure about our bodies, but I love trying to play a character to its total truth.’

As for his love life, the actor was previously linked to Saltburn star Alison Oliver with the pair having been spotted together in Italy.
