The super-virus is leaving people knocked down in its wake as the weather takes the turn, with one expert explaining why it’s important to be cautious when it comes to the new virus
A new and mysterious virus is ravaging the world as it leaves people feeling ill and run down. If you have felt fatigued, tired or suffered from a mysterious sore throat, there’s a chance you might have already had it.
Currently, with the weather taking a turn, Brits are already more likely to fall ill as we battle to stay healthy during the cold months. That, coupled with the superflu which is decimating NHS hospitals, has left Britain in a weak spot and unprepared for a new illness.
However, a new virus has seemed to appear and spread quickly, leaving a trail of sick patients in its wake. While it does seem scary, one expert says that the virus is actually not very surprising, and is following a ‘very typical pattern’ for this time of year.
Despite that, he’s also warned people to ‘err on the side of caution’ when it comes to understanding how severe the virus could be for you.
Dr. Suraj Saggar, chief of infectious disease at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, US, told NJ.com : “It’s not surprising when you have cold weather, increased air travel and then increased family gatherings.
“[It starts] with Thanksgiving and usually going towards the New Year, when you have Christmas and all the other holidays. That’s where you see an uptick and that’s what we’re seeing now.”
He added: “I think people have to understand that influenza is much more severe than people give it credit for.”
However, the good news is that most people who catch these common viruses can recover in their own time. He said: “A lot of times the goal is just supportive care and rest. Drink some hot soup and just take it easy.”
But individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying medical conditions should seek help if their condition worsen.
Dr Saggar said: “A big part of it is understanding your own risk factors and if you’re in any doubt, speak to your health care provider. Always err on the side of caution.”
Previously, speaking to PhillyMag, Eric Sachinwalla — Jefferson Health’s medical director of infection prevention and control – revealed that the world is being slammed with a condition known as adenovirus.
The disease is a relatively common virus that is present throughout the year but spikes around winter.
He admitted, however, that while adenovirus is much like the flu or COVID, we currently have no way to treat adenovirus. As a result, if you are struck down with the virus, you may just have to surrender to the illness and let it ride its course.
