A Ryanair plane has reportedly crashed into a fuel truck at a British airport.

Passengers had to be offloaded from the Faro-bound aircraft after a ‘wing tip came in contact’ with the tanker at Edinburgh Airport today at 10am.

No one is believed to have been injured, with one passenger telling The Scottish Sun that ‘thankfully we weren’t going at a fast speed’.

‘It was scary – the pilot came on the intercom and tried to pretend it wasn’t as serious as it looked,’ they said.

‘They can’t use the plane anymore.’

Edinburgh Airport told the Daily Mail there was no impact on any other flights, and the incident was stood down ‘within 30 seconds’.

Passengers have since boarded their rescheduled flight, which is understood to have departed after 12.30pm.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: ‘This flight from Edinburgh to Faro was preparing for departure when the wing tip came in contact with the cab of a fuel truck.

‘Passengers disembarked normally and a replacement aircraft was arranged to operate this flight to Faro.’

Meanwhile, Christmas getaway drivers were warned this morning of long delays following a crash on the M61 in Lancashire.

The incident caused damage to the central reservation on the motorway. National Highways closed one lane in order for repairs to be carried out.

The lane has since been reopened.

It comes as 24million cars are expected to hit the roads – the highest on record since ‘Frantic Friday’.

Journeys home for the great festive getaway combined with commuter and business traffic will cause substantial delays, the AA has predicted.

And to add to the disruption heavy rain is forecast in parts of Britain for the coming week – with 15 flood warnings in place and dozens more alerts.

It follows a record high number of cars heading home on Friday amid traffic gridlock, packed airports and rail chaos.

Passengers spotted today at Euston station in London as they make their journeys to see friends and family for Christmas

King’s Cross station also looked particularly busy today as people headed off to celebrate Christmas with loved ones

Traffic is set to be its heaviest on Christmas Eve when the RAC forecasts there will be 4.2 million journeys, making it the single busiest day for getaways over the period.

However, with fewer commuters around the roads are likely to be less busy overall.

A number of drivers are planning to make journeys at some point between Monday and Christmas Eve for last-minute shopping and other festive visits.

Shaun Jones, AA expert patrol, said: ‘Drivers will be heading out for all sorts of festive fun – from pantomimes and Christmas markets to family visits and scenic walks.

Those heading to Heathrow to catch flights are also being impacted by severe delays on the Elizabeth Line.

A points failure between Ealing and Acton has caused delays and cancellations on GWR and Heathrow Express services.

Transport for London said there were severe delays between Paddington and Heathrow Terminal 4, with no services running between Terminals 2 and 3 and Terminal 5.

Disruption is expected to last until around 1pm.

Elsewhere, TfL said that Euston and King’s Cross stations are currently busier than usual as people head off to celebrate Christmas with loved ones.
