If you’re looking for a riveting thriller to watch this holiday season, Channel 4 has your back with this snowy series – praised as being perfect for Agatha Christie fans.

Originally released in Italian in 2023, Stranded has just found a new audience thanks to the broadcaster, who have made all eight episodes of the series free to watch.

Released under the Walter Presents label, the show appropriately begins on Christmas Eve when a group of strangers find themselves trapped in an isolated location after an avalanche.

The show’s IMDb synopsis reads: ‘An earthquake isolates a luxury hotel and the mountain valley in which it stands, causing a general blackout. Days pass, help does not arrive and communication seems impossible.

‘Isolation and the gradual depletion of supplies increase the conflicts but give some of the survivors, first and foremost Giovanni and Claudia, murderer and unwitting victim, an unexpected chance of redemption.

‘One question hovers over everything: what really happened outside that valley?’

The Guardian gave the series three stars in its review and described it as a ‘riveting’ crime thriller.

The outlet praised: ‘We have a banquet of melodrama to feast on – a soapy melange of Agatha Christie, Lost and one of those cathartic sagas where rich people have a hellish time on a luxury holiday.’

The series, originally released under the title Black Out, has a solid rating of 6.6 out of ten on IMDb.

Alessandro Preziosi, who plays the show’s protagonist, Giovanni Lo Bianco, said of his character: ‘He’s a father who has just lost his wife.

‘He starts off with a fairly high level of difficulty that becomes exponential when, just when it seems like everything is fixable, the encounter with the character played by Marco Rossetti catapults him into a rather severe blackout.

‘Personal matters then become absorbed by those of the disaster that awaits them all.’

Viewers of the series were quick to praise its trailer on YouTube, writing: ‘I loved it. Alessandro Preziosi is wonderful both as a man and as an actor.’;

‘The plot is SUPER CAPTIVATING!’

Stranded also has its roots in reality too, with its writer, Valerio D’Annunzio, telling Movie Player that it has ‘subliminal’ references to the 2017 Rigopiano avalanche tragedy.

The Italian disaster destroyed a four-star hotel and claimed the lives of 29 people when it struck in the wake of a number of earthquakes in the region.

The writer said: ‘I think [it influenced me] more subliminally than consciously.

‘Both out of respect for what happened and to avoid the pornographic nature of narrating pain, let’s say we never considered it either as an example or a reference.

‘It’s undeniable, however, that something probably happened on a subconscious level.

‘Our narrative doesn’t involve violent confinement following such a dramatic event in a deadly and constraining environment like Rigopiano, but among other things, being from Abruzzo, I carried something inside me.’

Stranded is available to stream on Channel 4 now.
