Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim included both Fletcher brothers on his bench for the Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Boxing Day. After Jack made his Premier League debut less than a week ago, appearing as a substitute during United’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Amorim is dealing with a shortage of players, with both Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo sidelined through injury. He anticipates Mainoo will return before captain Fernandes, and would have been relieved to welcome back Casemiro following a one-match suspension.

The Fletcher twins, sons of former United midfielder Darren, switched to the Red Devils from Manchester City’s academy in 2023. A reported sum of £1.25million was sufficient to secure both youngsters for Old Trafford, where they have been featuring at youth level.

Darren earned 81 senior caps for Scotland during his playing days as an international. Tyler has followed suit by joining Scotland’s youth setup, whilst Jack has chosen to represent England instead.

“I think Jack Fletcher did a very good job and that’s why when we have this opportunity, we need to give space to guys like Jack and the other ones. So, we’ll find solutions to play,” Amorim told reporters on Wednesday.

The siblings were born in England whilst their father was playing for United’s first team under Sir Alex Ferguson, allowing them to choose between representing England or Scotland. Ferguson’s squad actually had a fixture on the day they were born, though Darren wasn’t selected as he was recovering from an ankle ligament problem at the time.

Jack has chosen to play for his birth country at the international level, despite having represented Scotland’s Under-16s in his younger years. He featured twice for Will Antwi’s England Under-19 team during the November international break, even scoring in a 4-0 triumph over Scotland.

Tyler was on the opposing side that day, leading the Scottish squad. He also netted his first goal at Under-19 international level in a 2-2 stalemate against Latvia earlier that month.

United supporters were thrilled to see both brothers on Amorim’s bench for the Newcastle match. “So happy to see the Fletcher twins on the bench together. What a moment for them and their family,” one fan commented.

“It must be a proud moment for the Fletcher family,” another supporter echoed. One fan felt a poignant reminder of the passage of time when looking at the teamsheet. “From watching Darren Fletcher during his prime back in college to this, football ageing just felt real again,” they reflected.
