The gingerbread man is dead as supermarkets cook up a woke gender-neutral storm as people say ‘let tradition be tradition’
Bonkers supermarkets have killed off gingerbread men – renaming them ‘gingerbread people’ to cook up a woke gender-neutral storm.
Chains have taken the male out of the runaway fairytale hero’s name on the festive season biscuit. Asda has changed its Free From Gingerbread Men to Free From Gingerbread People, priced £1.52, and Morrisons has £1.25 packs of Mini Gingerbread People on shelves.
Shoppers blasted stores’ rebranding. An Instagram user wrote: “Some people are getting offended but should let tradition be tradition.
Another wrote: “It’s ridiculous their name has been changed from gingerbread men, just stupid. It’s like saying ‘pregnant people.’”
User paulsynergy wrote: “Next they’ll have to stop calling them ginger, as that will offend people as well.”
Dean Geoghegan (correct) wrote on Facebook: “What if they self identify as custard creams?”
Frank Furedi, emeritus professor of sociology at Kent University, said: “Gingerbread men are a symbol of Christmas and striking at this culturally-loved icon mutualises it, replacing men with people.
“Some groups try to make others feel guilty for using the words man and woman. They want a genderless world.”
