Donald Trump, Barbie and Mario and Luigi roam streets in bonkers Boxing Day custom

Hundreds of Brits donned their finest fancy dress to pack out pubs and bars in a town’s bonkers boozy Boxing Day tradition.

Glam revellers flocked to King Street in Wigan for the town’s annual Boxing day bar crawl.

Partygoers were seen dressed as Oopa Loompas, the Joker and Harley Quinn and even US President Donald Trump as they braved the Baltic conditions to round off Christmas in style.

Others wore nun outfits or biblical costumes, such as three wise men. One woman even braved the cold by dressing as Barbie alongside her fella dressed as Ken despite temperatures dropping to as low as 3C.

The most popular costume of the night was Mario and Luigi, with the queue for Ibiza night club peppered with green and red blobs from the pair’s famous hats.

The revellers were joined by unhappy footie fans returning from Wigan Athletic’s 2-1 away defeat at Bradford City.

Many of the travelling Latics fans were seen in the crowd in fancy dress costumes, with glum-faced minions and Where’s Wally characters spotted among the away support at Valley Parade.

No-one seems to know exactly why the local tradition first started in the late 1970s.

Some claim it first started at Wigan Ruby Union club, who hosted a fancy dress ball on Boxing Day.

It then grew in popularity in the 1980s when the iconic Wigan Pier nightclub would offer free entry on Boxing Day to anyone in fancy dress.

And despite the rave spot closing down in 2011, the Boxing Day tradition has endured for another generation.

A whopping 20,000 revellers have been known to join the annual celebrations in previous years, though this year’s celebration was said to have been quieter than past parties.

PC McCoombs of Greater Manchester Police was on hand with other officers to keep an eye on proceedings. He said:”It’s normally quite quiet for us, people are here to Dress up and have a good time.

“As people are queueing to get in, they’re not getting served as quickly. But all it takes is one thing kicking off.”
