Manhunt for prisoner who absconded from jail over Christmas as cops warn ‘don’t strategy’

An inmate with connections to South West London vanished from HMP Springhill between Christmas and Boxing Day.

Mahad Elmi departed the men’s open prison, situated near Grendon Underwood in Buckinghamshire, sometime during the night or early morning hours.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the 27-year-old no longer possesses any authority or lawful licence to remain in the community and is therefore deemed unlawfully at large.

He is described as a black man, approximately 5ft 8ins tall, with a medium build.

He sports medium length black hair, facial hair and brown eyes, reports MyLondon.

Detective Sergeant Matthew French, from the Priority Crime Team, stated: “We are appealing for the help of the public to trace Mahad Elmi, who is unlawfully at large after leaving and not returning to HMP Springhill.

“If you see Elmi, do not approach him and call 999 instead. If you have any information as to where Elmi may be, please call 101 or make a report online, quoting reference number 43250653119.”

HMP Springhill operates as a Category D prison with minimal security, permitting eligible inmates to spend the majority of their day outside undertaking work or education.

The facility can accommodate around 335 prisoners.
