Murder accused in court docket after dad killed throughout Christmas occasion incident at pub

A man accused of murder following an incident at a Christmas party has appeared in court. Nathan Gothard attended Leicester Magistrates’ Court this morning (December 29). The 36-year-old of Church Street, Appleby Magna, was taken into custody after the death of David Darke.

Mr Darke, 66 passed away on Saturday (December 27) due to a severe head injury he suffered during an incident on Sunday (December 21). The alleged event happened outside The Crown Public House on Church Street, Appleby Magna, with police arriving at the scene just before 9.45pm.

Gothard, dressed in a black jumper and dark grey joggers, did not enter a plea. He spoke only to provide the magistrates with his name, address and date of birth, reports Leicestershire Live.

The prosecutor informed the magistrates that as the charge was murder, no bail application could be considered in the lower court.

Gothard will remain in custody until his next appearance at Leicester Crown Court, scheduled for Wednesday, December 31.

In a statement released through police, Mr Darke’s family said: “Dave was a deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three boys.

“He was a much-loved brother and a dear friend. Dave will live on forever in our hearts, minds and souls. He was a strong, active, intelligent and kind person who was a friend to all.

“He was a devoted family man with a deep passion for life, the outdoors, nature and walking.

“His life was tragically cut short and he’s now reunited with his loving, caring parents. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.”
