Trump says he would love to fireside ‘idiot’ Fed boss Jerome Powell in new row over constructing prices on the financial institution

Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on the chairman of the Federal Reserve – calling him a ‘fool’ he would ‘love to fire’.

The US President said Jerome Powell ‘should resign’ and accused him of ‘gross incompetence’ over the spiralling cost of work at the central bank.

Trump, who has criticised Powell’s reluctance to cut interest rates, came close to ousting him in July.

‘Maybe I still might,’ he said, adding he would announce Powell’s successor in ‘January sometime’.

The Fed chairman’s second term comes to an end in May 2026.

White House advisor Kevin Hassett, director of Trump’s National Economic Council, is seen as frontrunner to replace him, with Trump also considering former Fed governor Kevin Warsh.
