A former Cork City player has tragically passed away at the age of 20, with the League of Ireland side among those paying tribute to the talented young defender
Cork City have paid tribute to their former academy player Alan Nagle, whose death was confirmed on New Year’s Day by his former schoolboy club Castleview AFC.
The talented defender spent four years with the Turner’s Cross outfit from 2017, initially joining their Under-15s setup. During his time there, he also turned out for the Leesiders at Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
The League of Ireland club shared a heartfelt message honouring their late former academy prospect on social media. The statement said: “Everyone at Cork City FC is devastated to learn of the passing of former academy player, Alan Nagle.”
“Alan joined the club at Under 15 level in 2017, and spent 4 years at the club, also featuring for our Under 17 and Under 19 sides.
“Alan will be deeply missed by all of his former teammates, coaches and everyone at Cork City FC. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time. May he rest in peace.”
Nagle had also turned out for Castleview AFC, initially at schoolboy level before progressing to their Munster Senior League squad.
The club also released a moving tribute to their former player. “It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Alan Nagle,” the statement said.
“Alan was a hugely talented young footballer who represented our club with distinction at schoolboy level and later with both our Junior and Munster Senior League teams. Such was his ability and potential that he went on to join Cork City, a clear reflection of the talent he possessed and the high regard in which he was held.
“We also extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to James, his brother and our Jnr Premier Manager, and to his father Frank, and to all of the Nagle family and Alan’s friends during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are with you all.
“Alan will be remembered not only for his talent as a footballer, but for the impression he left on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Alan.”
