The M2 has been closed in both directions between Junction 5 at Sittingbourne and Junction 4 at Rochester – police are urging drivers to prepare for severe delays
A major motorway has been closed in both directions after a horror crash between a motorbike and a car. The M2 has been closed in both directions between Junction 5 at Sittingbourne and Junction 4 at Rochester.
Emergency services rushed to the scene in Kent at around 6.30am today (January 4). Diversions have been put in place in the wake of the horror smash with drivers advised to take alternative routes as traffic builds.
National Highways said: “M2 now closed both ways between J5 Sittingbourne & J4 Rochester with emergency services continuing to work at scene.
“Traffic travelling between London & Port of Dover is advised to use the M20.”
National Highways has not given an estimation of when the road may reopen as emergency services continue to work at the scene.
A spokesperson added: “At present there is currently no estimate available for when the road will re-open.” Here are the diversions in place:
Westbound route:
Exit the M2 at J5 and join the southbound A249.
Remain on the A249 to J7 of the M20.
Join the M20 westbound.
Exit the M20 at J4 and join the A228 northbound.
Follow the A228 northbound to J2 of the M2.
Eastbound Route:
Exit the M2 at J3 and join the A229 southbound towards Channel Tunnel
Continue on the A229 for approximately 2 miles and exit at the junction with the Cobtree Roundabout and then join the M20 eastbound towards Ashford
Exit the next M20 at the next junction (J7) and take the A249 northbound
Remain on the A249 north for approximately 5 miles to reach J5 of the M2.
