A 25-year-old footballer has died in mysterious circumstances after falling at least 20ft from a bridge.

Enrico Bigi landed violently on the ground, and his injuries were severe; he died a few minutes later. This was despite the rapid arrival of firefighters and paramedics, who tried to resuscitate him.

The tragedy unfolded in Chamonix, France, where Bigi, a keen skier, was spending his Christmas holidays around 4:30am on Thursday (1 Jan). French authorities believe he was alone at the time, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fall.

Local media reports he may have been under the influence of alcohol, as reported by NeedToKnow.

Enrico Bigi was born and lived in the Bologna area and had been playing for Montombraro, a Promozione team based in the hamlet of Zocca, in the Modena Apennines, for three years.

He previously played for Valsetta Lagaro and Corticella, where he built a solid reputation in the regional amateur scene.

A reliable defender and a key figure in the dressing room, Bigi played a decisive role with Montombraro in winning the 2023/24 Prima Categoria and subsequently won promotion to Promozione, even wearing the captain’s armband.
