Jessie Buckley had a night to remember on Sunday, scooping a surprise win at the star-studded Critics Choice Awards.
The Irish actress, 36, won the Best Actress gong for her role in Hamnet, beating a star-studded field of Emma Stone – Bugonia, Amanda Seyfried – The Testament of Ann Lee, Rose Byne – If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Chase Infiniti – One Battle After Another and Renate Reinsve – Sentimental Value.
Jessie used her emotional speech to pay tribute to her co-star Paul Mescal, 29, showering the hunky actor with compliments.
At one point she referred to her co-star’s heartthrob status, telling him: ‘I bloody love you, man, and I know loads of other women do in this room too, but tough s**t!’
Paul’s laughter then turned to tears as Jessie gushed from the podium: ‘You’re a giant of the heart and thank you so much for making me a little bit more human.’
In her speech, she also first thanked Hamnet’s writer-director Chloe Zhao after accepting the award from the presenter, Wicked star Jeff Goldblum at the annual award show held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

‘Chloe Zhao, you have reminded me of the power of telling a story and the journey that you can go on to touch the deepest parts of what it is to be alive.’
In Hamnet, which is based on the 2020 novel by Maggie O’Farrell sees Mescal play William Shakespeare while Buckley plays the part of his wife Agnes.
Written and directed by the Oscar-winning mind behind Nomadland, Hamnet is a fictional tale of the Shakespeare family’s domestic lives and the writing of his famed play Hamlet.
Buckley also gave a shoutout to their fellow costar, Emily Watson, and said she was her ‘north star from the beginning.’
She also thanked the child actors, who played her and Mescal’s onscreen children in the film.
‘To my kiddywinks, Jacobi [Jupe], Olivia [Lynes], Bodhi [Rae Breathnach]. Thank you for reminding me what it is to have a ball again,’ she said.
Mescal was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category but lost to Jacob Elordi for his performance in Frankenstein.
Jacobi Jupe was also nominated in the Best Young Actor category but lost to Sinners’ Miles Caton.

Zhao was one of the nominees for Best Director, but the honor ultimately went to Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another.
Hamnet’s Nina Gold was also a nominee for Best Casting and Ensemble while Łukasz Żal was nominated for Best Cinematography.
The nominations in Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Score brought the the total number of Critics Choice Awards nominations to 11 and Buckley as their big winner of the night as awards season officially kicks off in Hollywood.

On the television side, it was HBO drama The Pitt which took home the coveted Best Drama Series Award with leading man Noah Wyle being recognized for his work in the Best Actor in a Drama Series category.
Meanwhile, during Chalamet’s acceptance speech, he publicly recognized his 28-year-old mogul girlfriend Jenner as he said: ‘Thank you to my partner of three years. Thank you for our foundation.
‘I love you. I couldn’t do this without you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.’
Kylie appeared to have tears in her eyes and she stared adoringly at the actor on stage and said: ‘I love you, too.’
The New York native beat out an impressive field including the aforementioned DiCaprio – One Battle After Another, Joel Edgerton – Train Dreams, Ethan Hawke – Blue Moon , Michael B. Jordan – Sinners, and Wagner Moura – The Secret Agent.

A24’s Marty Supreme did lose the top honor to DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another – which was produced by Warner Bros. – at the end of the night as the field also included: Bugonia (Focus Features), Frankenstein (Netflix), Hamnet (Focus Features), Jay Kelly (Netflix), Sentimental Value (Neon), Sinners (Warner Bros.), Train Dreams (Netflix), and Wicked: For Good (Universal Pictures).
Paul Thomas Anderson earned Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for the action epic.

The 16-year-old rising star became the youngest ever to earn Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television for his name-making role for Netflix.
It wasn’t the only big win for Adolescence as Erin Doherty won Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television and Stephen Graham took home Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.
It also took home the top honor Best Limited Series over All Her Fault (Peacock), Chief of War (Apple TV), Death by Lightning (Netflix), Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy (Peacock), Dope Thief (Apple TV), Dying for Sex (FX on Hulu), and The Girlfriend (Prime Video).
