Drivers are facing marathon delays on a major motorway stretch with lane restrictions affecting both directions after two separate incidents.

Striking photographs reveal the overturned HGV lying on its side in a field beside the M1 southbound near Milton Keynes, which has sparked queues stretching back 3.5 miles.

Three northbound lanes were similarly shut down, creating extensive tailbacks this morning after an air ambulance was scrambled to attend a collision.

Congestion spanning five miles was anticipated in that direction.

National Highways issued this update regarding the crash: “Lanes 1 and 2 (of 4) are closed on the #M1 southbound between J14 (#Broughton) and J13 (#Brogborough) due to an overturned lorry. There is currently approx. 3.5 miles of congestion on approach, causing delays of 30 minutes above usual journey times.”

National Highways had previously reported a smash heading northbound on the M1 which resulted in three carriageways being sealed off and an air ambulance being dispatched to the location.

The organisation confirmed: “#M1 northbound between J12 #Toddington and J13 near #MiltonKeynes 3 lanes (of 4) are closed due to a collision. @roadpoliceBCH are at scene. An Ambulance has just left. Delays of just over 30 minutes, 5 miles of congestion. Updates to follow.”
