A man who sexually assaulted two young women at a Holiday Inn and attacked another woman after drugging her drink has been sentenced to prison.

Philip Duffield preyed on his first two victims, then aged 18 and 20, during an evening out in Shrewsbury in 2024. The 25-year-old was apprehended and released on bail, only to assault a third woman in Birmingham later that same year.

Following a court trial, Duffield, from Grosvenor Road, Solihull, was convicted of two counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration. Today, Wednesday, September 7, he received a 12-year prison sentence at Birmingham Crown Court, along with an extended three-year licence after being labelled a ‘dangerous offender’, reports Birmingham Live.

Duffield had been at the Shrewsbury Hotel Wetherspoons on April 26, 2024, with a friend who was acquitted of the charges against him.

It was there that he targeted the first two victims, who remembered him behaving in a sexually aggressive manner towards them.

After visiting Albert’s Shed and Fever nightclub, the group ended up back at a Holiday Inn.

Duffield, who had booked a room in advance, was caught on CCTV carrying one of the unconscious girls inside.

During the trial, it was revealed that his friend struck or pushed the 20-year-old, causing her to fall and injure her face.

While she was in the bathroom, Duffield raped the 18-year-old girl on the bed.

When the older woman returned to the bedroom, Duffield raped her in front of the first victim.

Judge Heidi Kubik Kc, delivering the sentence, told him: “You raped them when they were semi-conscious through extreme intoxication and unable to resist your sexual advances. They were particularly vulnerable because of their state of intoxication.”

The following morning one of the women went straight to a police station to report the attack, leading to Duffield being arrested.

He answered ‘no comment’ and was bailed pending a charging decision.

But on December 4 that year he took a woman back to his home after a night out at Glamorous nightclub in Birmingham.

She asked for a glass of white wine from his fridge but Duffield refused and instead gave her vodka mixed with Fanta and ‘something else’.

She recalled immediately beginning to drift in and out of consciousness.

The woman woke to find she was bleeding and being sexually assaulted by Duffield.

Later at the hospital her eyes were flickering and she was hallucinating, the court heard.

Judge Kubik continued: “I’m satisfied on the face of the evidence you did spike her drink with something for the purpose of facilitating the offence.”

She concluded Duffield was a ‘dangerous offender’, adding: “You remain unrepentant with a total lack of insight into the impact of your actions on the women concerned and a total lack of insight into your own wrong-doing.”

The 18-year-old victim from Shrewsbury revealed she had been left battling anxiety, depression and enduring nightmares. She explained she had been compelled to abandon college and now found herself completely friendless.

The 20-year-old described a similar devastating impact whilst the third victim chose not to provide a statement.

Antonie Muller, defending, informed the court that Duffield possessed ‘positive’ good character, having never previously been involved in criminal activity.

He also contended that his client was ‘sexually immature’ at the time, but Judge Kubik responded: “He was a university graduate, he had been in a good job earning a significant amount of money.

“There is no hint whatsoever of any level of immaturity in his case. But he is still a young man.”
