Italian locals were brutally woken up by a massive earthquake today which sent some into a ‘panic’. Luckily, there were no deaths, injuries or even damage reported
A massive earthquake has caused major panic in Italy. The major tremor registered a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale and was felt in the southern city of Reggio Calabria and across Sicily.
Residents were sent in to a panic when the ground began to shake at 5.53am today. The earthquake’s epicentre was found to be 65 kilometres under the ocean off the Ionian coast, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
Fortunately, no injuries, fatalities or damage has been reported. Domenico Costarella, head of the Calabria Region’s Civil Protection Department, told Sky TG24: “We have completed inspections in the area of the earthquake’s epicenter, which is the area overlooking the Ionian Sea where the earthquake struck.
“Fortunately, no damage has been reported. Of course, it was felt, there was fear, residents felt it clearly, there was a lot of interaction, including on social media, and several calls to the operations room, but fortunately no damage.”
Last month, Lancashire was struck by two earthquakes in a fortnight, sending tremors through local properties. The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed that a 2.5-magnitude tremor hit near the coast of Silverdale during the early hours of this morning (December 19).
Residents across the Morecambe Bay region felt the quake, describing “a quick sharp shaking jolt and made a thunder noise” whilst “the radiators and pictures rattled”.
This follows a more powerful 3.3-magnitude earthquake that rocked a similar part of the county earlier this month. The seismic activity occurred three kilometres below ground in Lancashire at 11.23pm on December 4 and was experienced “across the South Lakes and Lancashire, mainly within 20 kilometres of the epicentre, including Lancashire, Kendal and Ulverston”, reports Lancs Live.
In a social media update this morning, BGS stated: “BGS SEISMIC INFORMATION … SILVERDALE, LANCASHIRE 19 DECEMBER 2025 05:03 UTC 2.5 ML The following preliminary information is available for this earthquake: LAT/LON : 54.161° North / 2.852° West GRID REF : 347 kmE / 474 kmN DEPTH : 2.6 km MAGNITUDE : 2.5Ml”.
“Additional Information: Felt around Morecambe Bay area. Reports describe “a quick sharp shaking jolt and made a thunder noise” and “The radiators and pictures rattled.”
