M6 automobile blaze updates as all site visitors stopped after fiery crash on motorway

All traffic has been halted on a section of the M6 motorway this morning following a vehicle fire and collision.

Traffic has been brought to a standstill on the northbound carriageway near Knutsford, according to traffic monitoring service Inrix. Tailbacks are forming leading up to the closure at junction 19.

Images from the scene revealed a vehicle ablaze, with thick smoke pouring into the air above the motorway. A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire Service said: “INCIDENT | Firefighters are currently at the scene of a vehicle fire on the M6 Northbound near to Junction 19. There will be delays in the area so please avoid if possible.”, reports the Manchester Evening News.

An eyewitness says the crash involved a HGV and multiple other vehicles. The HGV and one car collided, which then had a knock-on effect on a number of other vehicles.

The fire which set on fire is reported to have flipped over in the crash. The eyewitness said they believe the people in the car on fire were able to escape unharmed.

A new update on traffic alert service Inrix says three lanes are shut on the M6 northbound near Knutsford.

A further statement at 12.25pm added: “Lane four has reopened to start moving the traffic. North West Ambulance Service is in attendance and treating one casualty. Firefighters are monitoring the vehicle that was on fire with a thermal imaging camera.”

Three lanes remain shut.
