Micah Richards had a dig at Alan Shearer live on television during the BBC’s coverage of Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Saturday evening
Alan Shearer has called Micah Richards every name under the sun after finally responding to the dig his fellow pundit delivered during the BBC’s live TV coverage of the FA Cup.
Richards are Shearer were both working on the Tottenham Hotspur versus Aston Villa third-round tie on Saturday evening. The former was a pundit in the studio alongside Danny Murphy and presenter Kelly Cates.
She assumed the role Gary Lineker took up during his time at the BBC before leaving the corporation last summer. Shearer, meanwhile, was up on the gantry with commentator Steve Wilson and retired assistant referee Darren Cann.
During the pre-match build-up, Richards made a joke about Shearer never winning the FA Cup during his career. That is something Lineker always took great pleasure in doing over the years they spent covering the competition together.
Richards brought up the gag at the start of Monday’s episode of The Rest is Football. Speaking to Shearer, he said: “Did you see I gave you a little bit before we were doing our show?
In reply, Shearer said: “Yeah, you d***head, what a d*** you are. I wasn’t even going to mention that; I wasn’t even going to give you the satisfaction.
“For once in 20 years, I was thinking, I don’t have to put up with that s*** about not winning the FA Cup before a game on the BBC. And this p**** decides to mention it just before kickoff.”
Lineker did not watch the match and only found out about that moment during their recording. He said: “I actually missed that, because I went to the theatre last night. I was guessing that’s what it was. Well done, big Meeks. Keep that tradition going.
Richards replied: “Yes, I had your back, Gaz,” before explaining what happened. He said: “There were two trophies [in the studio, the original and the current version]; it was something about the original one. Is that right?
Shearer agreed before pulling Richards up on what he said: “That’s it. Why? Were you not listening? You were in the studio, you were talking about it, you must know what it was about.
In response, Richards continued: “Well, I wasn’t talking about it, but I basically saw a moment to get a gag on you, and I was waiting for the right timing, so I wasn’t listening to them, to what Kelly was saying, I was just listening or waiting for the right moment to get in there. And I just said: ‘Two trophies Alan’s not won.’ And the timing was perfection.”
“I knew he was listening on the gantry, because you always listen to our bits, you know, so when you go into your co-comms, you look at: ‘ah, I like a bit of that, I’ll use a bit of that,’ and I thought, ‘there you go, Alan, there you go, have that mate’.
Shearer conceded it was a good gag, but said: “I just wasn’t going to give you the satisfaction, not even mentioning it. Danny Murphy texted me because I could see my phone flashing, just as I was about to speak, and I could see it flash up, and Danny said, ‘Did you hear what Micah said?’ I just totally ignored him. I blanked him.”
