Michael Carrick look set to be named as Manchester United interim boss following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month – and he’ll have his once outspoken wife by his side.

Carrick was one of the two frontrunners to take the hot seat at Old Trafford for the rest of the season – until INEOS and the Glazers can find a permanent replacement in the summer. And the return of the former United midfielder might reignite one feud.

Back when the Englishman was at the heart of the Red Devils midfield during David Moyes’ ill-fated reign, United suffered one particularly embarrassing result at the hands of Greek giants Olympiacos in the Champions League.

And after the full-time whistle, in his capacity as an ITV analyst, Roy Keane delivered some scathing criticism of Moyes’ squad following the disappointing result, suggesting the Scotsman would be stunned by the calibre of players at his disposal.

The former Republic of Ireland captain also branded Carrick’s post-match interview as “flat – just like the team’s performance”. And that comment caught the eye of Carrick’s wife, Lisa.

The spouse of the then United midfielder unleashed a blistering tirade against the Reds icon on social media. Lisa immediately rushed to defend her husband, posting on Twitter: “Roy Keane what a ****, says anything to provoke a reaction.”

Following the removal of her initial message, she subsequently posted: “Deleted my tweet. Emotions got the better of me… just disappointed.”

Michael and Lisa have been together since the age of 15, having become inseparable during their time together at school in Tyneside.

The childhood sweethearts tied the knot in 2007 at St Peter’s church in Wyndmondham. And she stuck by his side through his career at Old Trafford, hanging up his boots in 2018.

The pair would return to Teeside in 2021, after a spell in the United coaching staff, when Carrick was named as the Middlesbrough manager – a position he held until 2025.
