A lucky shop worker netted a cool £250,000 after cashing in old scratchcards he found on top of his microwave.

Anthony Brayson, 38, splashed out on a £2 Silver Scratchcard using his previous lotto winnings when he popped to his local Tesco for his lunch.

And after scooping the jackpot, family man Anthony wants to use his winnings to pay off his mum’s mortgage, take her on holiday and visit Australia to see an old friend.

He said: “I’ve already taken my mum and dad out for some lovely meals. They’ve done so much for me over the years, so being able to treat them feels really special.

“I want to pay off the rest of my mum’s mortgage – that’s really important to me. Knowing she’ll have that weight lifted is one of the best parts of this win.

“My parents mean everything to me, and we’ve always wanted to go to California, so I’m hoping to make that happen for them.

“I am also looking forward to reuniting with one of my oldest friends who moved to Australia 11 years ago. The win is really allowing me to do all the things I’ve been wanting to do for years.”

The win came just weeks after Anthony started a new job, which allowed him to have Christmas off work for the first time ever.

He is also converting the loft and renovating the kitchen of his house, which he bought off his grandma a few years ago.

He added: “Everything just seemed to line up – the new job, Christmas off for the first time and then this. I still wake up thinking it’s a dream. It’s the best start to the year I could ever have asked for.

He said: “I had to double-check it over and over again. In fact, I immediately rang my mum to tell her the news, and when she didn’t believe me I had to get my dad to come over and check it as I honestly thought I must have read it wrong.

“It was the first proper Christmas break I’ve had in a long time. Working in the retail industry means Christmas is always extra busy.

“This year I finally had time to relax, spend time with family, and just enjoy the season instead of working through it. That alone felt like a win.”
