Conor Gallagher is poised to return to the Premier League with Tottenham after Spurs submitted a £35m bid for the Atletico Madrid midfielder, aiming to hijack a Premier League rival’s swoop
Conor Gallagher is reportedly on the brink of a move to Tottenham from Atletico Madrid, with an agreement between the two clubs believed to be imminent.
The dynamic England international, who previously played for Chelsea, has found himself out of favour at the Spanish club. Spurs have tabled a bid just under £35million for the 25-year-old, which Atletico are expected to accept.
Aston Villa had also expressed strong interest in securing Gallagher’s services during the January transfer window, but no deal was struck. This has paved the way for Tottenham to step in and bring the player back to England after a year and a half in La Liga.
Despite being a regular feature in Diego Simeone’s side during his first season at the Wanda Metropolitano, making 50 appearances, Gallagher has found game time hard to come by in his second season.
The midfielder, who cost Atletico £38million in the summer of 2024, has only been in the starting line-up four times in La Liga this season. He did start in the Supercopa de Espana semi-final defeat to Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia last Thursday, but it now seems he will be moving on.
According to The Athletic, Gallagher is eager to return to London and Atletico are expected to accept Tottenham’s £34.7m offer. He will be aiming to get back into contention for the England squad ahead of the World Cup this summer.
Gallagher, who has 22 caps for the Three Lions, hasn’t represented his country since playing 59 minutes in the loss to Senegal last June.
Since then, Thomas Tuchel’s side have won six consecutive matches without conceding a single goal, and Gallagher hasn’t been included in any of the German’s last three squads.
Spurs are keen to bolster their midfield as Rodrigo Bentancur faces more than three months on the sidelines due to injury. The Uruguayan international needs hamstring surgery following an injury sustained in the defeat at Bournemouth last week.
The north London club has also lost Mohammed Kudus to a long-term injury this month. The Ghanaian winger won’t be back until after the March international break due to a thigh issue.
