Xabi Alonso has left Real Madrid with immediate effect.
The former Liverpool midfielder lasted just seven months in charge of Los Blancos before his departure was announced “by mutual agreement.”
Alonso’s final match in charge of the Spanish giants came in the Spanish Super Cup final, where they were defeated 3-2 by Barcelona. Madrid are also four points behind their Catalan rivals at the top of La Liga.
A club statement said: “Real Madrid C.F. announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his tenure as first-team coach.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always embodied the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire coaching staff for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives.”
Alonso’s tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu has been marred by clashes with several key players, including Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Endrick. He was also involved in an embarrassing moment with Kylian Mbappe following the final defeat when the French superstar appeared to undermine his manager.
