Up to 640 jobs are set to be generated at budget retailer Lidl as part of ambitious plans to launch 19 stores over the coming eight weeks, as the chain accelerates its expansion strategy.

The German-owned supermarket revealed the store launches will establish its footprint in fresh areas across the UK, encompassing locations such as Calne in Wiltshire and Brough in Yorkshire.

This follows the group achieving the significant landmark of unveiling its 1,000th store last year, as it aims to add approximately another 40 sites in the year to February 28.

The company also disclosed it was ploughing £43 million into renovating more than 70 outlets nationwide.

Modifications as part of the shop transformation include upgraded tills and expanded freezers to provide a broader product selection.

The retailer is additionally introducing innovative energy-efficient features, including chillers utilising natural refrigerants and intelligent lighting systems that cut electricity consumption.

Richard Taylor, chief real estate officer at Lidl’s UK operations, said: “We’re starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve.

“With this push, we’re set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market.”

Lidl currently ranks as Britain’s sixth-largest grocery chain, according to experts at Worldpanel, having secured the most substantial market share increases in the sector in recent months. Industry experts are predicting that Lidl could potentially leapfrog its competitor Morrisons, currently in fifth place, in the coming months if it maintains its current trajectory.

Recent data from the group revealed a robust festive period, with a 10% surge in sales resulting in over £1.1 billion in turnover in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve.
