Moment drink driver is caught on his personal dashcam smashing into scooter rider – as he avoids jail

A driver who was nearly three times over the limit when he smashed into a scooter rider from behind has avoided prison.

Craig Churches, was caught on his own dashcam accelerating towards a red light before a learner rider off his bike.

The victim was seriously injured in the crash in December 2024 and is still recovering more than a year later.

Footage from Churches’ dashcam showed the 33-year-old driving on the A4 Bath Road while listening to music.

He accelerated towards a junction, where vehicles ahead were slowing down as the traffic lights ahead turned red.

Churches continued to accelerate towards the traffic lights, passing two drivers on the lane beside him and failing to react to brake lights from a car and scooter ahead of him.

He finally appeared to hit the brakes just a few feet away from the biker and came crashing into him from behind.

The driver was pulled onto the car’s windscreen while his vehicle was propelled forward from beneath his feet.

The victim then fell into the road and was seriously injured. He is still recovering from his injuries more than a year later

As Churches’ finally came to a halt, the force sent the victim flying off the front of the car and into the road, hitting the ground hard while his bike was still spinning from the impact of the crash.

Parts of the motorcycle were broken off and debris could be seen on the road in front.

Churches can be heard saying: ‘Oh my f****** God.’

Thames Valley Police (TVP) say Churches, from Slough, Berks., was breathalysed at the roadside and blew more than 100 micrograms of alcohol.

The legal limit is 35 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath.

Churches was later charged with driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above the legal limit and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, at Reading Crown Court last month.

He is also required to undertake 100 hours of unpaid work, pay £3,000 in costs and is disqualified from driving until 2028, TVP said.
