Jon Stewart Trolls Trump For Claiming We Need To Annex Greenland To Stop Russia From Becoming A ‘Neighbor’

“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart torched President Donald Trump for outrageously claiming that the United States needs to annex Greenland so Russia doesn’t become our neighbor.

On Tuesday’s episode of the late night talk show, Stewart called attention to the fact that Russia and the state of Alaska already share a maritime border across the Bering Strait.

Stewart played a clip of Trump stressing that if the U.S. doesn’t “take over Greenland,” then Russia or China will.

“We’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor,” the president declared.

In response, Stewart displayed a map showing Alaska and Russia right next to each other as the audience cackled over the president’s blunder.

“Russia’s already our neighbor. This is where Greenland is,” Stewart emphasized while pointing at the Danish territory on the map. “Russia is closer! Unless, in your mind, you think Alaska lives in a box next to Hawaii. But no, no, no. I get it, I get it. We don’t want Russia or China to take over Greenland.”

The host then mocked Trump by suggesting that the U.S. should form a “kind of an alliance with Denmark and Greenland” to prevent that from happening, which already exists through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a frequent Trump punching bag.

“We could include all of the North Atlantic nations. What would we call this? Like, almost like, a North Atlantic Treaty Organization,” Stewart cracked.

Elsewhere in the episode, Stewart played a clip of Trump saying, “I’m a fan of Denmark, but you know the fact that they had a boat land there 500 years ago doesn’t mean that they own the land.”

“Can someone pass him a note? How do you think we got our land?!” Stewart asked. “We landed here on a fucking boat 500 years ago, and it was ours!”

He added, “That’s like the argument you make when you want to give land back to the people who were already there, not for you to then take it because you’ve got a bigger boat. You’re doing some weird, reverse-woke land acknowledgement.”

“I would like to acknowledge that Greenland sits on colonized and conquered Indigenous peoples’ land,” Stewart joked, mimicking Trump. “And I would also like to say ‘dibs.’”

Stewart’s string of jabs came after he played a clip earlier in the show of Trump boasting that the U.S. is “going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not,” adding that “we’re going to do it the hard way” if need be.
