Donald Trump threatens to deliver again centuries-old regulation – ‘End this travesty’

Donald Trump has threatened to bring back 19th-century law amid a row with Minnesota politicians over ICE.

The US President said he would institute the Insurrection Act if local politicians in Minnesota do not put a stop to people protesting the increase in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in the state.

Posting to Truth Social, Trump said: “If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State.”

Tensions in the Minnesotan cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul rose after DHS announced earlier this month that it had launched a crackdown related to allegations of fraud involving Somali residents. Over 2,000 ICE agents have been deployed to Minnesota to carry out its “largest immigration operation ever”.

Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mum of three, was shot dead by an ICE officer in Minneapolis on January 7, sparking nationwide protests.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin claimed the agent acted in self-defence, alleging one of the “rioters” was “attempting to run over” federal officers. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, however, said the officer acted “recklessly”, pointing to video footage that emerged showing ICE agents approaching a car in the middle of the street before one fires three shots through the front windscreen as it attempts to drive off.
