Michael Carrick faces a busy first month in charge of Manchester United as the 44-year-old interim head coach not only has to quickly familiarise himself with the squad he’s inherited from Ruben Amorim, but navigate player departures and arrivals.

The January transfer window is currently in full swing, with numerous players rumoured to be on their way in or out. Despite United not expected to deviate from their plan to stick with their current talent pool this month, the gossip continues to swirl since the appointment of the United legend.

While Carrick’s primary focus will be steering United towards the best possible Premier League finish this season, there are areas of concern that may need addressing to avoid future pitfalls, as the club also look towards the summer and a permanent managerial appointment. Here’s all the latest news from Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes exit decision

Bruno Fernandes is reportedly not seeking an exit from United this month. The club captain has recently been linked with several Saudi teams, including Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr and Al Hilal, reports the Mirror.

Reports have also suggested Fernandes is contemplating his future at his current club following the dismissal of Amorim. The 31-year -old midfielder was seen meeting with one of his former head coach’s backroom staff, Carlos Fernandes, after the sacking, fuelling speculation that he might be considering following Amorim out the door.

However, fresh reports from BBC Sport suggest sources have indicated Fernandes remains dedicated to his duties at United for the remainder of the campaign. It’s believed he will weigh up his future options come summer, when he enters the final 12 months of his deal with the Red Devils.

Green light given for goal machine

According to Sky Sports, Juventus have received the “green light” from Luciano Spalletti to make an approach to Crystal Palace for Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The Italian giants are reportedly seeking a long-term replacement for Dusan Vlahovic, whose current Turin contract runs out this summer. United are thought to have maintained a sustained interest in the French striker, who has netted eight Premier League goals in 21 appearances for the Eagles this term.

Should Juventus step up their pursuit of Mateta, it might encourage other suitors to intensify their own efforts for his signature. This could subsequently force United to finally throw their hat into the ring for the frontman, or face the prospect of never witnessing him showcase his talents at Old Trafford.

United presently boast several attacking options, with Benjamin Sesko spearheading the attack, backed by Matheus Cunha – who can also function as a No.9 but has shifted into an attacking midfield position this season.

According to reports, Palace will demand approximately £30million to part with Mateta this month, though that valuation could increase depending on the level of interest.

Old Trafford exits

Two deals placed on the backburner United supporters will need to wait a bit longer to discover what lies ahead for Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo, as Fabrizio Romano reports “there are no signals from United,” regarding any potential moves this month.

Roma continue to show interest in Zirkzee despite their recent acquisition of Robinio Vaz, whilst they’re also pursuing Donyell Malen. The Dutch striker is believed to be receptive to a Serie A return, though the decision ultimately rests with United.

Meanwhile, Napoli are understood to be keen on Mainoo, who is said to be frustrated by his limited playing opportunities recently. It’s unclear what Carrick’s plans are for the midfielder, particularly given the Red Devils have largely relied on Fernandes and Casemiro throughout the campaign.

Nevertheless, Carrick will surely have conversations with both Mainoo and Zirkzee before the February 2 deadline arrives, ensuring everyone understands the situation.
