Brahim Diaz saw his Panenka penalty saved deep in stoppage time during the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco
Former Manchester City striker Brahim Diaz was left in tears after his spectacular penalty miss during an incident-packed Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco. The 26-year-old saw his spot-kick saved by Edouard Mendy in the 111th-minute after a failed panenka attempt
There was a 13-minute delay after Senegal manager Pape Thiaw dragged his players off the pitch after being left incensed by a controversial penalty being awarded. The Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ngambo was at the centre of the anger, having disallowed their opener moments earlier, before pointing to the spot following a tussle in the box.
After the players returned to the pitch, Diaz had the opportunity to write his name into Moroccan football folklore. But he tried the cheeky attempt to lift it down the middle, only for former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to be equal to the danger.
Diaz’s miss was the last kick of normal time and he had to be consoled by his teammates during the interval before extra-time. Walid Regragui was in a heated discussion with the Real Madrid star and just eight minutes into extra-time, he was substituted.
Cameras panned to the 26-year-old and captured him in tears with his shirt over his mouth as he watched on from the bench. Moments earlier, the deadlock was finally broken as Pape Gueye scoreda spectacular opener to give Senegal the lead.
