In the UK, it typically takes around three to four weeks for patients to complete basic health tests through the NHS, factoring in waits for GP appointments, test bookings, and results. However, there are some alternatives that can potentially speed up the process, which are also free.

This week, Superdrug is giving away more than £1 million worth of free at-home Health Measurements, Observations, and Tests (MOT) test kits, helping 10,000 Brits check their health from home. The free Health MOT kits, worth £111.33 each, will be available on Thursday (January 22) at selected Superdrug stores.

This offer comes as the month of January remains the busiest time of year for winter illnesses, and demand on the NHS continues to rise.

Moreover, new NHS data shows around 1.7 million GP appointments in England involve waits of four weeks or more, with GP surgeries seeing a surge in patients reporting coughs, fevers, sore throats and stomach symptoms. Hospitals across the country have also warned of intense winter pressure, with a number of NHS trusts declaring critical incidents in recent weeks as seasonal viruses circulate widely and demand for care continues to rise.

By offering free at-home Health MOT kits, people are given a chance for a quicker way to understand what may be behind their symptoms. This ultimately helps to reduce unnecessary GP visits at a time when NHS services are under significant strain.

As part of the initiative, 10,000 free Health MOT kits, each worth £111.33, will be made available. The kits allow people to test for common winter illnesses and wider health concerns from home without needing to book a GP appointment or attend a surgery.

The free Health MOT kits include tests for Covid-19, flu, Strep A and UTIs, alongside checks for iron deficiency, thyroid function, menopause and vitamin D levels. Additional tests covering bowel health, stomach ulcers, kidney health, ovulation and male fertility are also included, offering a broad snapshot of overall health in one go.

Designed to be simple to use, many of the tests deliver results in minutes, providing fast reassurance for those who are unwell, or a clear prompt to seek medical advice sooner if needed. In London, the free Health MOT kits will be available at selected Superdrug stores including Wimbledon and Marble Arch.

The tests are supplied by Newfoundland Diagnostics , one of the UK’s leading providers of at-home diagnostic tests.
