Donald Trump slams UK for ‘act of nice STUPIDITY’ and doubles down on Greenland

Donald Trump has taken aim at the UK in a Truth Social post this morning.

Trump suggested Britain’s ceding of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius will be an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY” and another reason as to why the US needs to take Greenland. The post came at 6.38am UK time – 1.38am where the president is in Maryland.

It comes as Sir Keir Starmer is due to hold talks with ministers at his weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, following his call for calm in response to the US leader’s threats of a trade war over Greenland. Trump said on Monday evening he was 100% committed to hitting the UK and European allies with tariffs over their opposition to his Greenland plan.

The president said in his post this morning: “Shockingly, our “brilliant” NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER. There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness.

“These are International Powers who only recognize STRENGTH, which is why the United States of America, under my leadership, is now, after only one year, respected like never before. The UK giving away extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY, and is another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired. Denmark and its European Allies have to DO THE RIGHT THING. Thank you for your attention to this matter. PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The Chagos Islands have been a British territory since 1814 when France ceded them along with Mauritius. The islands were established as the separate British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) in 1965, with the native Chagossian people forcibly removed soon after to allow the US to build a military base on Diego Garcia.
