Despite there being around 2,600 branches of Costa Coffee in the UK, locals in Melton Mowbray will have to travel nearly nine miles to get thier fix after today’s closure
A major branch of one of the UK’s most popular coffee chains will close today – leaving an entire town without one. Costa Coffee has around 2,600 branches UK-wide, but locals in Melton Mowbray are not left without a branch.
According to a Facebook post from those running the branch on South Parade, which is the only branch in the town, the store will close today.
A notice was posted just two days ago stating: “We will be closing on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. We would like to say thank you to all of our customers over the years for the support and friendships you have given us.
“Look after yourselves, Carrie and the team.”
The rare piece of good news for Costa fans is that the branch was flogging the hard-to-get syrups and flavouring for just £5 each, with all money going to Costa’s charitable foundation.
However, upon hearing of the closure, locals flocked to the Facebook page to express their sadness, as one called it “such a shame,” and another claimed the staff were “all amazing”.
A third wrote: “Like a lot of your regulars I will be sorry to see you close, you and your team have provided a service that has been brilliant and I thank you for what you’ve done. I wish you well for whatever your future brings.”
A fourth posted: “We wish you all the very best wherever life takes you. Just can’t believe there’ll be no Costa in melton. Sad times indeed.”
Another commentor blamed “greedy landlords” for the closure, however the Daily Star has reached out to Costa Coffee’s head office for a comment on the reasons for the shuttering.
Having investigated the complaints from locals that this is the only branch in the town, it does appear that there are actually no other branches for at least 8.6miles – with the nearest now being a drive-thru branch in Oakham.
There are, however, seven Costa Coffee Express machines within a one-mile radius of the now-closing branch in the market village.
