A woman in her 40s has died following a suspected assault outside a popular bar in North Shields.
Emergency services were called to Charlie’s Bar on Russell Street shortly after 10pm yesterday (January 24) to reports of a woman being allegedly assaulted. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition but sadly passed away.
North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance Service both attended the scene. as police placed a huge cordon in front of the bar.
A man, aged in his teens, has since been arrested on suspicion of murder. A woman, aged in her 50s, has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both remain in police custody at this time, according to Chronicle Live.
Northumbria Police’s Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, of the Force’s Major Investigation Team, said: “Firstly, our thoughts remain firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has died.
“We will continue to provide them with any support they need following this tragic incident. An investigation has now been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the woman’s death.”

He added: “A cordon is in place and officers remain at the scene – I would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to them. If you have any information, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, please get in touch.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to urge people to refrain from sharing speculation on social media which could jeopardise our active enquiries.”
Charlie’s Bar, which remains closed despite the police cordon being lifted, has also published a statement regarding the incident. The road around the bar has been closed for most of the today.

It read: “We are deeply saddened at the devastating news of last night’s incident, and send our deepest condolences to family and friends, we are cooperating with police in everything we can to help this investigation and would appreciate if people showed some consideration towards the family with their comments. Last post was deleted as the wording was put up before we heard the sad news.”
