Wayne Rooney has shared a humorous anecdote about how he ended up watching his son, Kai, make his debut at Old Trafford while wearing pyjamas. The youngster came on as a substitute for Manchester United Under-18s during their FA Youth Cup victory over Derby County this week.

Both Wayne and his wife, Coleen, were present to cheer on their son from the stands, alongside interim first-team manager Michael Carrick and assistant manager Steve Holland.

Kai, the eldest of the Rooney brood, has been climbing the ranks in United’s youth academy since joining the club in 2009. An own goal gave United the lead before Chido Obi extended it in the 103rd minute.

Despite the momentous occasion for the Rooney family, the former United forward revealed that he unintentionally turned up at Old Trafford in PJs due to a wardrobe mix-up.

“So I was at home, and I went into my wardrobe and I picked a tracksuit out,” he explained.

“I thought it was one of those oversized tracksuits that the younger lads are sporting these days. So I tried it on and found it quite comfy, so I kept it on, threw a big coat over it and headed to the match.

“Obviously, if it was a first-team match, I’d have dressed a bit smarter, but because it was a kids’ game [Under-18s], I just put it on and went to the match.

“It was only when I got home that Coleen [wife] checked the label and realised they were actually a pair of pyjamas.

“So I went to watch my son’s first game at Old Trafford in a pair of pyjamas, mistakenly. I had it off for like an hour inside!

“I had a full-on 10-minute conversation with Jason Wilcox [United director of football] in my pyjamas.

“One of my mates actually, Darron Gibson [former United teammate] I think it was, said, ‘They look like pyjamas.’

But they weren’t that obvious to be honest, I’ll get a picture for you for the next one [show] so you can see them, but they weren’t that obvious.

“It shows my style, I actually thought that it was an oversized tracksuit.”
