You’d be surprised how frequently mishaps of the rear-end variety occur, far more often than most people care to admit. A 19-year-old man had to be rushed to hospital after a deodorant container became stuck inside his rectum and could not be removed.

The patient, who was not named, was admitted to hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with intense pain. He also reportedly presented with abdominal discomfort after he inserted the deodorant during a “sexual game”, local media reported on MJanuary.

According to colorectal surgeon Daniel Brosco, the object moved further up and got lodged in the patient’s rectum. The medical team performed the removal procedure to avoid serious complications.

During the procedure, doctors monitored the patient’s overall condition to rule out internal bleeding or perforation. The patient remained in hospital under observation afterwards.

Dr Brosco said he decided to speak publicly about the case to warn others. He argued that these “sexual experiments” could have potentially deadly consequences.

He explained: “Fantasy is not the problem. The problem is not using objects designed for this purpose.” He added that he has already treated patients who developed severe infections and died after similar incidents.

The doctor said cases involving foreign objects stuck in the rectum have become increasingly common. He further revealed that in recent months, he has treated patients who required the removal of items including a potato, parts of a chair, a glass bottle and an anal plug.

He explained that the intestine can pull objects during involuntary contractions. It can also happen because of a vacuum effect created in areas such as the rectum, causing objects to become stuck very quickly.

Brosco also warned that if the object causes perforations of the intestine, the injuries can spread faecal matter and lead to severe infections that can be fatal. Whether due to curiosity, misadventure, or a misguided sense of experimentation, the emergency room sees a steady stream of unfortunate incidents involving foreign objects and the human posterior.

Earlier this year, stunned surgeons had to cut open a thrill seeker’s abdomen to remove a huge sweet potato – which he’d stuck up his bum. The unnamed man, 61, reportedly inserted the 17cm (7in) spud “out of boredom” at around 11pm, then went to sleep, the Daily Star previously reported.

But he was woken in the middle of the night by sudden, intense abdominal pain, and his attempts to pull the root veg out manually or pass it naturally failed. By 4am, the pain became unbearable and he rushed to a local hospital in Chengdu, China.

Baffled doctors tried breaking the tater into pieces, but it was too tough to crack. They then attempted to grip it with a wine bottle opener but that too failed.

After consulting with the patient, the medics decided a laparotomy was necessary. They opened his abdomen and removed the sweet potato directly, finally bringing the ordeal to an end.

A scan photo showed the large sweet potato lodged inside his rectum. When asked how it had ended up inside him, the patient reportedly told Dr Xu Guolin, deputy director of the hospital’s proctology and dermatology department: “I don’t know, it was an accident.”
