Revealed: Carlos Alcaraz’s mortifying second as he struggles to begin a golf cart at Melbourne Park

  • World number one was caught on camera

Carlos Alcaraz is closing in on a career Grand Slam at the Australian Open – but his golf cart driving skills leave a lot to be desired.

Alcaraz, 22, was caught on camera struggling to start the cart with his team on board – and fans on social media loved it.

‘Lucky he can play tennis,’ joked one in response to the clip posted on the Australian Open Instagram page.

‘This is too cute,’ said another, while a third weighed in with: ‘he can’t be good at everything.’

It comes as the Spaniard overcame German Alexander Zverev in a marathon five-set classic to reach his first final at Melbourne Park.

Alcaraz appeared to be cruising when up two sets to love on Friday, before cramps limited his movement in the third set.

In tense scenes on Rod Laver Arena, Zverev claimed Alcaraz and world No.2 Jannik Sinner were being ‘protected’ after the Spaniard took a contentious medical timeout.

Zverev managed to take the gripping contest to a fifth and deciding set, and was humble in defeat – but mid-match was fuming when chair umpire Marijana Veljovic opted not to give the 22-year-old a time violation.

The third seed accused Alcaraz of unnecessarily holding up play.

‘He has cramp!’ Zverev complained to Grand Slam supervisor Andreas Egli in a mixture of English and German.

‘He can’t take a medical, he is cramping. What else should it be?

‘This is absolute bulls***. This is unbelievable. Cramps? What the f*** is that? You cannot be serious.’

Zverev was adamant Alcaraz was receiving leniency because of his lofty position in the sport.

‘You are protecting both of them (Alcaraz and Sinner), this is unbelievable,’ Zverev fumed. ‘Unbelievable. This is not possible. You cannot be serious.’

World No.1 Alcaraz and Sinner have split the last eight major titles between them since Novak Djokovic won his last Slam at the 2023 US Open.
