Police have opened an inquiry after the deaths of a woman in Torquay and a man 150 miles away in Hampshire. Emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly before 4pm on Saturday 31 January following concerns about a woman at a property on Shirburn Road, Torquay.

The woman, aged in her 70s, was discovered dead inside the residence, with her death currently being treated as unexplained.

Local constables were tipped off by Hampshire Police, who had attended a home in Hythe, Hampshire, where they found a man in his 40s who had died, with his death not considered suspicious.

An inquiry is underway to determine the complete circumstances surrounding both fatalities, with scene cordons remaining at both locations whilst officers carry out their investigations, reports Devon Live.

The man and woman are understood to have been acquainted with each other, with relatives notified and receiving support from specialist-trained officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Pebworth commented: “This is a very sad incident and we are supporting the next-of-kin of those who have died. We continue to work with our colleagues from Hampshire Police as we investigate this matter.

“Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish exactly what has happened and cordons are in place to allow for a thorough investigation of both addresses.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area and we encourage anyone to speak with officers if they have any concerns.”

Those with information can reach police online or by calling 101, referencing log number 558 of 31 January.
