Shell-shocked surgeons were forced to call the cops and fire brigade after they found a ww1 artillery casing in the back passage a patient they were operating on
Surgeons were left shell-shocked when a patient turned up at a hospital – with a World War 1 casing stuck up his bum. The hospital in Toulouse, France, was evacuated and bomb disposal experts called in.
The man, 24, presented at the emergency room on Saturday night complaining of pain as he had “inserted an object” up his bum, but it was only when he was wheeled into theatre that surgeons saw the 16x4cm antique explosive up his back passage.
Doctors called the police and fire brigade who put the hospital on lockdown while they examined the device, which was eventually deemed to pose no danger.
A hospital source told local media: “During the operation, the surgeon discovered a shell dating from the First World War , which the man had inserted into his rectum.”
Bomb disposal experts took the shell with them while the patient remained in Rangueil Hospital to recover from surgery on Sunday, February 1. The police plan to open criminal proceedings for a violation of weapons legislation, local media reports.
The Toulouse public prosecutor’s office is expected to take over the case to fully investigate the incident after the man has been quizzed by police.
Four years ago, an 88-year-old man forced another French hospital to be evacuated when he turned up at Hospital Sainte Musse in Toulon with a World War 1 shell up his bum.
Bomb disposal experts at the scene confirmed there was little possibility the shell would explode inside the man and surgeons were able to operate to remove the 8x2inch shell from his rectum.
A hospital spokesperson said at the time: “An emergency occurred from 9pm to 11.30pm on Saturday evening that required the intervention of bomb disposal personnel, the evacuation of adult and pediatric emergencies as well as the diversion of incoming emergencies.
“We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework. When in doubt, we took all the precautions. The bomb squad] reassured us by telling us that it was a collector’s item from the First World War, used by the French military.”
In the same year, 45-year-old man cheated death after spending 10 days with a metal cup stuffed up his rectum before finally seeing a doctor.
It was believed to have been inserted into his anus by friends as a drunken prank during a raucous party in Surat, Gujarat, a dry state of India.
