Elsewhere during the night, Kendrick Lamar broke a Grammy Awards record by overtaking Jay-Z to become most awarded rapper in the annual ceremony’s 66-year history.
After scooping up five prizes in 2025, Lamar won five more including Record of the Year, cementing his status as one of contemporary music’s most impactful writers.
Sunday evening’s haul takes his collective Grammys haul to 26, one more than Jay-Z, whose 25 Grammy Awards was the most won by any rapper at the ceremony until then.
Already a Pulitzer Prize winner, Lamar’s music has made him a household name and a rare artist whose work is commercially successful but who is not dependent on a constant content churn.
‘It is hip-hop as usual, man. I’m not good at talking about myself, but I express it through the music,’ Lamar, 38, said Sunday as he accepted the best rap album award for GNX.
‘It’s an honor to be here. Hip-hop is going to always be right here. We are going to be in these suits looking good, having our folks with us. We are going to be having the culture with us. So I appreciate y’all. God is to glory. Love y’all.’
His Record of the Year honor came for Luther featuring R&B singer SZA. He also won prizes for best rap performance, best rap song and best melodic rap performance.
