When England began their preparations for the 2026 World Cup following that heart-wrenching Euro final defeat to Spain, Jude Bellingham seemed like the ultimate “undroppable.”

He was the golden boy of the squad, and most fans assumed he’d be the first name on the teamsheet for years to come. However, under the new leadership of Thomas Tuchel, that certainty has started to fade.

The Real Madrid midfielder was arguably the hero of the Three Lions’ summer run, netting the winner against Serbia and producing that Tier-1 moment of magic with his overhead kick against Slovakia.

But since Tuchel took over from Gareth Southgate, the landscape has shifted. The first real shock came in October when the 22-year-old was left out of the squad for the double-header against Wales and Latvia, despite having recovered from a shoulder problem.

He did return for the most recent break, starting in the 2-0 win over Albania, but it was his reaction to being substituted that caused the real stir.

Visible frustration as he left the pitch has raised questions about how he fits into Tuchel’s strict team culture. The German manager was firm after the match, noting that players must respect the decision and their teammates waiting to come on.

While Tuchel played down any long-term friction, chalking it up to Jude’s immense competitive drive, it was a clear signal that reputation alone won’t secure a spot in his World Cup XI.

Fitness is also becoming a nagging narrative. Bellingham has made 28 appearances for Madrid this term, contributing six goals and four assists, but a recent hamstring injury picked up against Rayo Vallecano has fans worried about his physical state.

Between the tactical shifts, the questions over his temperament, and his recent injury record, the debate is wide open: should Jude Bellingham still be a guaranteed starter for England in 2026?
