Electric automotive gross sales stall as drivers are delay by Rachel Reeves’s pay-per-mile tax

Electric car sales have stalled amid signs drivers have been put off by Rachel Reeves’s tax raid.

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures showed 29,654 vehicles powered by battery alone were sold in January – up just 0.1% year-on-year.

EVs accounted for 20.6% of sales, the lowest since April. 

The Chancellor has announced a pay-per-mile tax on EVs despite warnings it will hit the transition to ‘green cars’.

Ian Plummer, chief customer officer at Autotrader, said: ‘Any increasing tax burden will slow the progress of EV adoption and give drivers less incentive to switch.’
