After their sell-out reunion tour around the world, the Gallagher brothers are on top form, with their infamously tense relationship now as good as it has ever been
Liam Gallagher said he is ‘so proud’ brother Noel has won a ‘songwriter of the year’ BRIT Award — and they are now ‘like The Waltons’. The Oasis rocker said the once-feuding siblings were so close he would happily present his ‘very talented’ bro with the gong ‘if he asks me nicely’.
The pair recently reunited for a record-breaking 41-gig comeback world tour. Noel, 58, was chosen as this year’s recipient of the coveted gong — won previously by Ed Sheeran, RAYE and Charli xcx — by a panel of expert judges.
He will collect it at this year’s BRITs on February 28 at Manchester’s Co-op Live which will be broadcast on ITV and hosted by Jack Whitehall. Asked on X how he felt about his brother winning the award Liam, 53, said: “SO PROUD”.
When another fan asked if he would be going to the ceremony the singer replied: “Yes of course I am. We’ll all be there like The Waltons.
“He deserves it he’s very talented young man. If he asks me nicely I might give him the award.”
The brothers reunited on stage in Cardiff, Wales, on July 4 for the first time in 16 years since a backstage bust-up split up the band. Fears old tensions could resurface proved misplaced and a global clamour for tickets led to the tour being repeatedly extended.
It included five nights in the Gallaghers’ home city of Manchester, seven shows at Wembley Stadium in London and performances in North and South America, Australia, Japan and South Korea. The band performed the same setlist comprising 23 of their biggest hits each night.
Liam said he was desperate to get back on the road with the band this year but they are taking a break until after the World Cup in the summer. Stacey Tang, chair of the 2026 BRIT Awards Committee and co-president of RCA Records at Sony Music UK, said: “‘For more than three decades Noel has crafted songs that have become part of our collective story — bold, brilliant, and always recognisable.
“His songs have soundtracked memories for multiple generations and defined the spirit of British music globally. Honouring Noel as Songwriter of the Year celebrates a remarkable body of work and a creative force that continues to connect and inspire artists and fans worldwide.”
The Oasis stars have had a booze-drenched riotous history with the BRITs. In 1996, while accepting a gong for Best New Band, Liam grabbed the microphone from award presenter Micheal Hutchence, and said: “Right, first thing first. I heard Michael was going to give me a slap. So come on.”
Noel savagely added: “Has-beens shouldn’t be dishing out awards to gonnabes.” The brothers famously mocked Britpop rivals Blur by performing a rendition of their hit Parklife at the 1996 ceremony.
Then as the 2001 BRITs handed an award to U2 Noel aimed a dig at band A1, saying: “This award ceremony over the years has been accused of not having a sense of humour, but when you see A1 winning best newcomer, you know that someone’s taking the p*** somewhere.” Explaining the brothers’ antics on a podcast Noel said: “You can’t have a hangover if you’re always p*****.”
