Skiing legend Lindsey Vonn’s hopes of a fairytale Winter Olympics comeback looked to have ended as the star crashes out today (February 8).
The American athlete was competing despite recently rupturing her ACL. Shocking scenes from the Winter Games show the icon in agony as she is stretched off the course.
Vonn was competing in women’s downhill final when the Milano Cortina 2026 crowd went silent as the star crashed out of the contest early in her run.
The 41-year-old American received medical attention as the shocked faces could be seen in the crowd. Vonn lost control over the opening traverse after cutting the line too tight and was spun around. The race was put on hold as she continued to receive treatment.

Scenes looked even worse for Vonn when a helicopter was called in and the veteran skiing was airlifted away from the course.
All eyes were on Vonn, the feel-good story heading into the Olympics. She returned to elite ski racing last season after nearly six years away from the circuit.
On a partial titanium knee replacement in her right knee, too. Her surgery in April 2024 left her feeling so good that she decided to give it a go for another Olympics appearance.
