Daily Star’s Carly and Bekka loved visiting the eatery

Stepping into The Pepper Tree in Clapham was like walking into a vibrant, welcoming world where every detail is designed to delight. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel like part of the family, greeting us warmly and guiding us through the evening with genuine care. The atmosphere was buzzing but never overwhelming, packed with energy yet comfortable, and we could see exactly why it is so popular. It is a stone’s throw from Clapham Common Station and perfect for a date night, or a fun evening with friends if you find yourself single this February 14. One of the highlights was being able to peek into the kitchen and watch the chefs in action, creating beautiful dishes that were almost too pretty to eat. And yet, each bite was even better than it looked.

The food at The Pepper Tree is a true feast for the senses with vibrant colours, fresh ingredients, and authentic Thai flavours that dance on the palate. The hardest part of the evening was deciding what to order because every dish looks incredible. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable, not going to break the bank but will fill you up to the brim.

We started with prawn crackers served with a selection of homemade sauces including a fiery hot sauce and sweet chili. For starters, we could not resist the crab and prawn dim sum which were delicate parcels of flavour, bursting with juicy seafood and subtle aromatics. The salt and pepper squid was crisp on the outside but tender inside, perfectly seasoned with a hint of garlic and chili.

The wok-fried prawns were succulent, coated in a fragrant sauce that balanced heat and sweetness, and the chicken and prawn skewers from the specials board were smoky and charred to perfection with a sticky, slightly sweet glaze that was an absolute standout.

For mains, the beef massaman was rich and comforting with tender chunks of slow-cooked beef, creamy coconut, and a subtle warmth from spices. The tom yum soup was vibrant and tangy, packed with fresh herbs, mushrooms, and plump prawns, delivering that signature punch of lemongrass and lime.

The short rib paneang was decadent, the meat falling apart in the most satisfying way, bathed in a velvety, nutty curry sauce with a gentle kick of chili.

Dessert was pure indulgence with warm sticky toffee pudding, moist and sweet with a caramel sauce that melted into every bite, and a plum and ginger brownie served with vanilla ice cream that combined richness with a hint of spice. To round off the evening, we enjoyed a decadent shot of Frangelico that was the perfect final flourish.

The cocktails deserve a special mention. Freshly made and expertly balanced, they were some of the best we have had in London. The Lychee Mai Tai was refreshing with just the right kick to revive us after a day of exploring the city and the Spiced Pineapple Daiquiri was a tropical delight, perfectly spiced and utterly moreish.

Excitingly, The Pepper Tree is now welcoming punters for Valentine’s Day with a specially crafted menu that promises the same high-quality, vibrant dishes in a romantic setting. It is an opportunity to experience the magic of The Pepper Tree in an even more memorable way, perfect for couples looking to celebrate.

Every aspect of The Pepper Tree exceeded expectations with friendly, attentive service, stunning Instagram-worthy dishes, and a lively yet welcoming atmosphere. We left feeling utterly satisfied, already planning our next visit. This was not just dinner, it was an experience, and we cannot wait to return.
