Peter Ellery from Smethwick was sentenced to over two years in prison after terrorising his ex-girlfriend with chilling threats including references to gunman Raoul Moat
A stalker ex-boyfriend issued a chilling warning to his former partner telling her: “I will make Raoul Moat look like a f****** minor.” Peter Ellery dominated and manipulated the woman throughout their relationship before terrorising her following their split.
The 38-year-old dictated who she could speak to, accused her of infidelity when she visited the toilet during the night, and threatened suicide if she ended their relationship. After she eventually left him, he bombarded her with sinister threats, including that he was “watching your every move.”
He also made reference to notorious gunman Raoul Moat, who shot his ex-girlfriend, murdered her new boyfriend, and wounded a police officer before taking his own life in Northumberland in 2010, reports Birmingham Live.
Ellery, from Shenstone Road, Smethwick, pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour and stalking causing serious alarm or distress. He was jailed for two years and three months at Birmingham Crown Court.
Judge Sarah Buckingham slammed the “appalling” treatment of his former girlfriend and said: “You are a narcissist, that means you love yourself more than anyone else.
“You are self-obsessed and blame everyone else but yourself for your own predicament. You are an insecure man with low self-esteem.”
Matthew Wyatt, prosecuting, revealed to the court that Ellery prevented his partner from leaving their home and falsely accused her of having affairs with other men. “Even if she got up to go to the toilet in the night he would accuse her of sneaking out to see someone else,” he said.
Ellery constantly monitored her phone and forced any male friends to leave the room with him to prevent them being alone with his partner.
Mr Wyatt continued: “If she tried to end the relationship he became angry, would smash things and threaten to commit suicide. The defendant burnt their clothing in the back garden and smashed the house.”
When the victim finally managed to break up with Ellery, he bombarded her with phone calls. Mr Wyatt said: “She described feeling suffocated and scared to go out of her own home and scared of what he might do.
“He threatened ‘I will make Raoul Moat look like a f****** minor.”
Ellery displayed weapons to his ex and “boasted” about possessing guns. He sent her messages claiming he was “watching your every move” and that he even knew how much toilet roll she was using.
Ellery contacted her family and threatened to “destroy” her life. He also rang her friend and threatened to track down his ex and shoot everyone in the house.
Ellery was arrested and banned from contacting the woman but continued sending vile texts. Mr Wyatt said: “She felt horribly degraded and worthless. He called her a grass. He asked how much danger she was putting herself in and the person she was sleeping with.”
Ellery had racked up more than 50 previous offences. Defending, Amrita Marwaha stated that her client was “embarrassed” by his actions and that drugs had “clouded his judgement.”
She revealed that he had completed a warehouse course while in custody and expressed a desire to relocate from the Birmingham area.
Judge Buckingham cast doubt on Ellery’s assertion to a probation officer that he was unable to work due to a disability and planned to claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP) upon release.
She challenged: “If he’s fit enough to do work in prison he’s fit enough to get a job when he’s outside isn’t he?”
The judge admonished him, stating: “Until you accept your flaws and weaknesses in your own personality and until you accept responsibility you will always be a risk to women like her or future partners.”
Ellery was slapped with a restraining order, banning him from contacting his ex.
