The warning comes from the energy industry regulator, Ofgem
Households with OVO, E.on Next, Octopus Energy, British Gas and Scottish Power are being warned to take a meter reading on the exact day they move home.
The warning comes from the energy industry regulator, Ofgem, who says a failure to do so risks disputes and delayed refunds. In a post on X, Ofgem said: “Moving home can be stressful, but don’t forget about your energy supplier!
“Give notice, read meters, and provide a forwarding address to avoid issues.”
Experts at Uswitch warn that failing to follow the full moving house checklist can lead to overpayments, estimated bills or even being chased for energy you didn’t use.
They advise customers to:
- Tell their supplier the moving date and don’t cancel direct debits too early
- Take gas and electricity meter readings when leaving the old property
- Provide a forwarding address for final bills or refunds
- Take readings immediately on arrival at the new home
- Check which supplier is currently providing energy
- Compare tariffs before switching, if planning a new deal
Even if you plan to move straight onto a cheaper tariff, you are responsible for energy used from the day you take over the property.
With energy bills still far higher than pre-crisis levels, small mistakes can quickly become costly.
Ofgem’s advice is to mark moving day in the diary, read the meters and stay in touch with your supplier – it could save hundreds of pounds and weeks of wrangling.
