A toilet brush is a bathroom essential, required for regular cleaning duties as well as tackling any unpleasant stains as they appear. However, like all cleaning equipment, these brushes need refreshing from time to time.

This might involve giving it a thorough wash in the sink, or throwing it away entirely and purchasing a replacement. Regardless of the method, you’ll eventually face the inevitable need to replace your toilet brush.

But the question remains: how frequently should this happen? One Reddit user sparked bewilderment among fellow users when they revealed how regularly their spouse replaces their toilet brush. They sought opinions from others on the platform’s Cleaningandtidying forum, reports the Mirror.

They posted: “My wife is insisting that we need to replace the toilet brush monthly. This seems rather wasteful to me, how often do you all replace yours? If ever?”

Responses varied widely, though most agreed replacing the brush every month isn’t necessary. One respondent commented: “It does not need to be changed monthly, that’s just ridiculous. All you have to do is clean it. I only replace it when it doesn’t work well.”

Another branded monthly brush replacement as “ridiculous”. “Monthly? That’s just wasteful,” they wrote. “I bleach mine every time I clean the toilet. You could replace once a year. I tend to do that for my bathroom but not the guest bathroom, it’s not used that often.”

Other users mentioned they only replaced their brushes when they became ineffective. One participant stated: “I keep it until the bristles start falling off.”

One user responded: “The one we have is silicone rubber. Works perfectly. No bristles. At least five years old. No plans to replace it at present.”

Several users suggested swapping a regular toilet brush for a disposable toilet wand, which features a single-use cleaning head that can be discarded after each use.

Another user said: “Your wife is being wasteful both financially and ecologically. Replace when the brush is worn and quits being effective at its designed job or when you move (because no one wants to transport that from place to place).”

They added: “She can bleach it occasionally, but no need to replace it. Our landfills will thank you. If she continues to insist, then get the disposable ones (also wasteful in my opinion) because at least that’s what those are designed for.”

One user was praised for their innovative approach, sharing: “I change my IKEA toilet brush about once a year. After each toilet clean, I spray it with Lysol disinfectant spray and place it under the seat with the brush hanging in the bowl.

“When it’s dry, I put it back into holder. That way no wet mess goes into the holder and your brush will last longer and not smell.”

This idea was met with enthusiasm, with one user exclaiming: “Game-changing suggestion.” Another chimed in: “If I had an award I’d give it to you. Genius!” A third agreed, saying: “This is a great idea.”
