A British tourist is fighting for his life after being stabbed when he chased down a thief who had just stolen a friend’s phone in a Tenerife holiday resort.
The 18-year-old was attacked as he caught up with the mugger behind a bar in the Las Veronicas area of the resort of Playa de las Americas shortly after 2am on Monday morning.
Emergency medical responders said the tourist’s condition was ‘serious’ although one local report described it as ‘critical’ and he is thought to have been admitted to an intensive care unit after being taken to hospital.
No arrests are yet thought to have made, although police have tasked a specialist team with trying to identify and detain the knifeman.
A spokesman for a regional government emergency response centre said: ‘An 18-year-old man has been seriously injured after being stabbed in Rafael Puig Lluvina Avenue in Playa de las Americas.

‘The vicim was transferred to the Universitario Hospiten Sur Hospital after being stabilised at the scene.’
The unnamed holidaymaker had been chasing a man who ‘violently robbed’ a British female friend’s phone when he was attacked, local newspaper El Dia reported.
He is understood to have been attacked near a bar called Oasis.
The area where the stabbing took place is hugely popular with British holidaymakers.
In July 2024 a British man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being knifed in Playa de las Americas.
The victim, who was admitted to an intensive care unit at a hospital in the Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, was on holiday on the island.
