Olympic stars have resorted to extreme measures to get their hands on contraception during the Winter Games in northern Italy
Sex-crazed Olympians are shelling out £90 each for condoms as the athletes’ village is hit by a contraceptive shortage.
Amid the stress of top-tier competition on the world’s grandest stage, competitors are known for getting intimately acquainted with one another in the relative privacy of the village. However, the stars of the 2026 Games in Milan-Cortina seem more frisky than usual, if the demand for contraception is any indication.
A recent delivery of 10,000 condoms vanished within 72 hours, leading to an additional batch of 5,000 being rushed to the village this week, according to Italian media. Even that might not suffice, with officials confessing that demand was “higher than expected” and attributing the surge to Valentine’s Day.

The organising committee told German news agency DPA: “We can confirm that condom stocks in the Olympic Villages were temporarily depleted because demand was higher than expected. They will be continuously replenished until the end of the Games to guarantee their ongoing availability.”
Meanwhile, IOC spokesperson Mark Adams quipped: “10,000 were used for 2,800 athletes, you can do the maths. This clearly shows that Valentine’s Day is in full swing in the village!”
That demand has resulted in condoms changing hands for as much as €105 (around £90) online on sites like Vinted. However, it seems not all are being utilised for intimate purposes, with the yellow cardboard packaging featuring the Milano-Cortina 2026 logo being viewed as a collectable.
The appetite for condoms shouldn’t come as a shock if accounts from previous Winter Olympics are anything to go by. Tales of raucous parties, wild behaviour and even orgies are widespread.
While many athletes keep their escapades private, others have been more than willing to reveal what happens away from the spotlight. Legendary American snowboarder Shaun White once disclosed what takes place, boastfully claiming that the US team threw the finest ‘room parties.
He proceeded to “plead the fifth” [no comment] when questioned if he had ever engaged in intimacy within an Olympic village. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that he was aware of Olympic village orgies.
Alpine ski racer Laurenne Ross had no reservations discussing her romantic adventures in the village, telling Cosmopolitan in 2018 that she “hooked up with everyone.”
Meanwhile, skeleton racer John Day offered his theory on why Winter Olympic villages are such hotbeds of sexual activity, saying: “Incredibly good-looking [athletes], perfect bodies, tight Spandex… Of course, there’s gonna be some hooking up! Would you expect anything else?”
