Every time a summer or winter Olympics rolls around, we’re treated to stories about the sex-mad athletes involved in the games. However, it’s a little less common to get the kind of detail about Harry van Barneveld’s antics.

The 2026 Winter Olympics brought headlines about a condom shortage in Milan and Cortina. Back in 1996, though, a direct proposition at an Olympic party was the order of the day for judo star Van Barneveld.

In 2026, stars have reportedly been making some extra cash by sharing behind-the-scenes images on an adult site. Things were different in 1996, though, when the internet was unlike how it is these days.

“A young and healthy mind in a healthy body: it’s therefore not unusual to have a little more flirting and, from time to time, a few excesses,” Van Barneveld said, as reported by Belgian site 7 Sur 7. “Yes, it happens often. Athletes are under pressure. We’re not talking about a single day, but a long period of training, sacrifices, pushing themselves to their limits. And then, suddenly, it all stops.

“It’s normal for this energy to be released, and one way to do that is through sex. That doesn’t mean you see people having sex in the street; it’s not that bad. In Barcelona [in 1992], there was a section of beach reserved exclusively for athletes. I didn’t see it with my own eyes, but it must have happened there.”

He added: “There’s definitely an atmosphere of, ‘It’s going to happen here.’ For my part, I always had big parties afterwards, but it was mostly about drinking a lot of beer.

“That said, a woman once came up to me and asked me directly if I wanted to have sex, if I wanted to go to the bathroom with her—especially after winning a bronze medal in Atlanta. It’s not exactly appealing. But if you really wanted to, there were plenty of opportunities.”

Van Barneveld said he would have taken a branded condom home as a souvenir had he seen one when competing in 1992, 1996 or 2000. Judging by events this year, though, they don’t last very long in the Olympic village.

A supply of 10,000 contraceptives reportedly dwindled down to zero within just three days. This left some athletes ready to fork out as much as £90 to get their hands on one, as Valentine’s Day coincided with the competition in Italy.

“We can confirm that condom stocks in the Olympic Villages were temporarily depleted because demand was higher than expected,” organisers told German news agency DPA. “They will be continuously replenished until the end of the Games to guarantee their ongoing availability.”
